Toby Lynch Sydneysiders came in their thousands to visit the 2007 Sydney Motorcycle Show last week, with surging crowd figures reflecting the continued willingness of Australians to embrace the motorcycling lifestyle like never before.
28,073 visitors browsed the nation's most complete and comprehensive showcase of motorcycles, scooters, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), accessories, apparel and services - a 13% increase on 2006 figures.
This is the highest attendance figure since the Show relocated from Darling Harbour, and Sunday's crowd of 11,765 people is the biggest on record.
The diversity, scale and innovation of over 115 exhibitor displays, including all major motorcycle manufacturers, delighted visitors who expressed an overwhelmingly positive response.
"The Sydney Motorcycle Show has underpinned its reputation as the nation's leading showcase of new motorcycle models, products and accessories following this event, with all major targets exceeded," said Andrew McKellar, Chief Executive, Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
"Motorcyclists are the fastest growing group of road users as people are placing a greater premium on convenience, flexibility, fuel economy and low running costs, as well as many other benefits," he said.
"This rapidly-rising popularity was reinforced at the Sydney Motorcycle Show with visitors of all ages and backgrounds enjoying the range of motorcycles and attractions on offer, and a number of attendance records broken, setting the scene for a fantastic future for the event."
Over the last five years, the national motorcycle market has grown by a remarkable 75.7 per cent - with total sales of motorcycles, ATVs and scooters on track to exceed 130,000 units by the year's end following the traditionally forecast seasonal sales spike in the fourth quarter (October - December).
The continued strength of the national economy has led to additional consumer demand for off-road and recreational motorcycles.
The FCAI has today released proposed dates for the 2008 Sydney Motorcycle Show - November 21-23 (to be confirmed).
