Scooter News Gilera GP800 V's TMax 500 Performance V's Practicality
motociclismo Comparative tests are starting up overseas involving the two most sporting maxi scooters ever produced and motociclismo is one magazine that has done just that.
Recently released the Gilera GP800 is built for speed and capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h very quickly. The Yamaha TMax 500 on the other hand is refined and built for daily use, not losing its scooter roots but still reaching speeds in excess of 160 km/h.
Both scooters run engines of different displacements with the TMax running a 500 cc parallel twin whilst the Gilera has a whopping 90 degree V twin at 839 cc.
The Gilera GP800 is chain driven whilst the Yamaha TMax 500 has a traditional CVT set up.
Weight is everything and at this point the Yamaha is 40 kg lighter and places its claim of being a more manageable day to day scooter.
But the strength of the Gilera lies in its open road ability. Its lightning quick and on the road acts like no other scooter in terms of acceleration.
For 2008 the Tmax also gets an aluminum frame and 15 inch wheels whilst steering angles have been revised.
The newly revised 2008 Yamaha TMax 500 we will see early in 2008 but a date hasn't been confirmed on the Gilera GP800 as yet.The newest Gilera to hit Australian shores will be the Fuoco, the three wheeled mammoth which releases this month.
Take a look at the gallery showing the differences of both scooters in the flesh and decide which one is for you. Is it Performance or Practicality?
In the mean time look out for tests coming up in the next addition of scooter magazine.
