50cc scooters to be put to the ultimate reliability test at Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon
Efficiency, economy and reliability will be the name of the game as a full field of 20 scooters and close to 60 riders rev up for the start of the 2009 Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon next Saturday February 14 at the Parklands complex in Southport.
A prelude to the Australian Scooter Festival and Australian Motorcycle Expo, the event puts a variety of manufacturers and their entry-level 50cc models to the ultimate test, with each three-rider team aiming to complete the most kilometres from midday on Saturday to midday on Sunday.
In the past, individuals have elected to ride for the duration, but 2009 sees the re-emergence of team entries which will help to combat the fatigue factor as night sets in.
As always, a number of industry personalities have put their hands up to be involved.
Stunt legends Matt Mingay and Robbie Bolger will make a popular return, along with former V8 Supercar racer John Faulkner. Ado and Ben Wah from hit series ‘Blokesworld’ are also back for more.
Scooter shops throughout the region are heavily represented as well, with teams from Scooter HQ, Scooter Shop, Scootopia and Full Throttle Motorcycles sure to be amongst the frontrunners.
Event Manager Mark Petersen said the event had developed a strong following in the industry and always turned out some surprising results as the chequered flag fell.
“The Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon is all about extremes – it’s a chance for riders to push their 50cc for as long as they can go to determine reliability and efficiency,” said Petersen.
“Riders need to stay focused and only twist the throttle as far as needed – aggressive riding will mean more stops for fuel, and it does add up over the course of 24 hours!
“Once part of a niche market, scooters are quickly becoming a regular part of day to day transport, with numerous benefits including reduced fuel and registration costs as well as ease of manoeuvrability and parking.
“The scooters that compete in the event will then be on display at the first ever Australian Scooter Festival, which will be held in conjunction with the Australian Motorcycle Expo the following weekend (February 20-22).”
As well as riding for bragging rights, entrants will also help to promote the Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation and its primary cause, organ donor awareness.
“We’re proud to put our support behind the Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation and its causes – any profits made from entry fees will go directly to the charity,” added Petersen.
The Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon is a free event and public are welcome to attend. It takes place on the Go Kart track within the Parklands Complex.
It kick starts a huge week of two-wheel action, with the Australian Motorcycle Expo set to take over the entire Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre with a host of new models, exciting attractions and adrenaline-fuelled demo sessions.
