Mojo 150 RTi Review

A surprise packet from Mojo Scooter Co. The Mojo 150 RTi, a solid, honest package with features not usually seen in this price bracket.

Allen Drysdale

The Mojo Scooter Company is a fresh face on the Australian scooter scene. Mojo Motorcycles started life importing the Motovert brand of mini bike, and has grown to now become the company in charge of importing well know scooter brands such as TGB and Sachs. With a wealth of experience importing powered two wheeled products and accessories, Mojo thought it was time to play a larger part in the scooter segment.

So welcome the Mojo 150 RTi, one of their ‘in-house’ models sporting their own Mojo moniker.

The Mojo Scooter Company has hand picked a selection of scooters for the Australian market, all designed to fill a gap in the better-than-budget end of the showroom . All smartly priced and offering fantastic value for money, the Mojo brand stands for fashion and fun, all of which goes some way to summing up the 150 RTi.

Enough on the Mojo Scooter Co. and more about the 150 RTi itself. If I was to tell you that you could purchase a 150 cc liquid cooled, fuel injected scooter with 16 inch wheels, disc brakes front and rear, at a price around the $3000 mark, what would you say? Too good to be true? Read on...

Firstly, the 150 RTi looks the part. Nice front end styling, with classic curves and big wheels, the 150 RTi really has a euro feel and look. The fins in the grill give the front end a bold and powerful look, but also serve the purpose of channelling air to the radiator which cools the engine. The 16 inch wheels, flat floor and flowing rear panels all wrap up the package to one that is pleasing on the eye. All panels fit nicely together and the paint finish is spot on, further reinforcing Mojo’s desire to bring quality to the less expensive end of the market.

Seat height on the Mojo 150 RTi can be a challenge for the vertically impaired amongst us, but this is common with many big wheeled machines, and you do need to trade off the benefits that the 16 inch wheels bring with it. Plenty of ground clearance for cornering, and road handling that is above the rest of the class thanks to a wheel and suspension package that is well tuned to this scooter. Twin shocks on the rear end with your regular preload adjustment, means you can adjust them up if pillion riding is your thing. And when you do need to carry a pillion, nice flip out foot pegs give your passenger a sure footed sense of security.

Sitting on the 150 RTi is very upright and typical of large wheeled scooters. Being high off the ground you do get a commanding view over many of the road users around you. All the controls are there including a digital clock, and the switchgear is nice to feel and use and falls easily to hand. The additional gauge which you don't see too often in this class is for engine temperature, whilst speed and fuel are all fairly big and easy to read.

On the road the 150 RTi is summed up best by using the word “comfortable”. Not overly sharp in its handling, but typically large wheeled; meaning not overly harsh. Dynamically, a good all round package that will suit the majority of commuting scooterists. Anyone who has spent any time on a large wheeled scoot will find the Mojo’s ride and handling somewhat familiar. There is an added sense of security that comes from the larger wheels, an improved, smoother ride, and a handling dynamic unmatched by the smaller wheeled cousins. Larger wheels are luxurious, and the Mojo is a fine example of the breed.

Storage is limited by those large wheels although there is still a fair amount of room under the seat. Your carrying capacity is enhanced with the flat floor and a pretty sturdy rack on the back which will accommodate a top box nicely. A small glovebox up front allows you to stash small items like sunnies or your wallet easily within reach.

But, without a doubt, the number one feature of the Mojo 150 RTi would have to be the transmission and engine combination which works so seamlessly. Being fuel injected the Mojo bursts into life as soon as you hit the starter, and accelerating from standstill is impressive. If you’ve not spent some time with an injected scoot, you don’t know what you’re missing. No need to pump and caress the throttle on a cold morning to get started, no missing or stuttering when you open the throttle wide to accelerate. I've had two experiences on the RTi now. One directly out of the crate and one with a couple of hundred km's on the clock. With a few kilometres on the ODO the Mojo was impressive to say the least. The Mojo defies the normal Chinese trends- meaning plenty of power on the spec sheet equals plenty of power on the road too, and this is where the Mojo belies its cost. If the daily commute also calls for a short spurt of motorway use then no need to worry the Mojo 150 RTi will tackle these shorter highway runs with ease.

With all the specifications that adorn the Mojo 150 RTi, you really do get a feature rich scooter for the money. In this price bracket you don’t normally see this kind of spec or build quality- the fuel injected, liquid cooled engine package transforms this scooter from being the norm to being a cut above.

Quality is to be commended and the manufacturing company, CF Moto from China, has a solid reputation worldwide. Just Google “CF Moto E Charm” and you will see what I mean. Perhaps nothing ground breaking in terms of technology or packaging, but a well thought out scooter that brings quality and value to a corner of the showroom often unloved or neglected by some. In fact, it would be fair to say the Mojo 150 RTi has set a new benchmark for the other Chinese manufacturers and their Australian importers. Even some of the long-established and otherwise respected Chinese brands here in Aus have some work to do in order to catch up.

There you have it. A solid, honest, reliable package that has the backing of a reputable and solid Australian distributor. A scooter that has a reputation worldwide as a great performer, rather than just another Chinese no-name. A scooter that punches above its weight, offering the commuter some spec normally reserved for the Europeans. Warranty coverage is two years- with the first year being parts and labour, the second year being parts only. Nice one Mojo, the 150 RTi gets my vote.
