Scooters are real-world alternatives
Commuters who have rejected scooters as being impractical transport might doubt that a 16,000 kilometre, 15 day round-Australia attempt on a scooter could possibly succeed. But that is exactly what Julio Languiller is hoping to do on his Honda Silverwing.
Julio is already a bit of a legend in scooter circles with three 24 hour records attempts under his belt. He says that the circumnavigation will be just like those three records, but back to back, over fifteen days.
“Scooters are a fantastic tool for commuting, but we are out to prove that they are actually a great way to get around, whether that’s to the shops or to the Cape,” he said. “We are lucky to have arranged for Honda’s new maxi-scooter, the 600cc Silverwing which will make the 1,000+ km days a lot easier.”
“The Honda Silverwing is supremely comfortable and stable and, with great fuel economy and a 16 litre fuel tank, an amazing range,” he said.
Julio will be flagged away on his epic journey by Melbourne Lord Mayor, John So, confirming Melbourne’s reputation as Australia’s most motorcycle friendly city. He departs at 9.30am on Sunday 6 August from Federation Square. Over the next 15 days, Julio will follow Highway 1, stopping at each State capital, except Hobart. His longest day, from Port Hedland to Halls Creek will be 1,378 kilometres of remote outback roads.
With the average car taking up four times the space on the roads as a scooter, and using more than twice the fuel, it’s not surprising that increasing numbers of commuters are abandoning four wheels for two.
In fact, scooter sales have accelerated significantly as fuel prices rise. Last year, scooter sales broke through the 10,000 unit mark for the first time.
Apart from their fuel efficiency, scooters offer real world alternatives for commuters, offering a lower cost than public transport, with a flexibility that the average public transport user can only dream about. Road congestion, pollution and parking could all be largely solved by a mass move to scooters for commuting. In addition, accident rates are extremely low.
The Scootering around Australia run will also prove that scooters are capable of dealing with the vast distances in Australia- proving that there’s really no need for the big Australian car [unless you want to tow a boat or caravan!].
Current cost of Melbourne –Sydney return [@$1.40/litre]
Scooter $101.64 [Honda NSS250Forza, 4.1litres/100km]
Six cylinder sedan $222.76 [Ford Falcon, 9.0 litres/100km]
Four Wheel Drive SUV $334.15 [Toyota Prado, 13.5 litres/100km]
The bike that Julio chose to tackle his epic Scootering round Australia run is Honda’s brilliant, brand new maxi-scooter: the Honda Silver Wing. Not long ago, the idea that a scooter could be powered by a 600cc fuel- injected 50ps twin and be capable of turning in a 1000km+ day would have been unthinkable. Julio’s job will be made easier and more comfortable by the scoot’s long wheelbase, sophisticated suspension and powerful brakes. Add exceptional fuel economy into the mix, and around Australia will be [almost] as easy asround the block. The Silverwing also offers great wind protection, comfortable dual seat, huge under seat storage, and a long-legged ability to put away the miles unmatched in the scooter world.
