Gold Coast ‘scooter commuters’ are saving hard-earned dollars on running costs and time in traffic, but it’s unlikely that any have put their wheels through a challenge like this one.
Next weekend, 24 teams of up to three riders will tackle the InsureMyRide Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon, a non-stop endurance test designed to find the most fuel efficient and mechanically-reliable 50cc manufacturer and model.
Presented by TGB Scooters and the Australian Motorcycle & Scooter Expo Gold Coast, the sixth running of the event will see teams travel approximately 1200km or around 2000 laps of the Gold Coast Parklands closed course.
Rider changes allow participants an opportunity to re-fuel and re-hydrate, though there will be one lone scooter on track trying to break a Guinness World Record benchmark.
Mark ‘Brownie’ Brown will pilot his scooter for the full 24 hour duration in an attempt to re-claim his own record for the most kilometres covered on a 50cc scooter in 24 hours.
“I set the original record a few years back but that was since beaten and I’m determined to write my name back into the Guinness World Record books,” said Brown.
“It’s a challenging event but I know what it takes, the only thing that could stop me is mechanical failure.”
The current record is 1178.76km, set by teenager Jake Dolan.
Organisers are raising money for the local charity ‘Give me 5 for kids’, and hope a line-up of well-known motorcycle riders will rally the public to attend and make a gold coin donation at the gate.
The event will run from 12pm on Saturday December 17 to 12pm on Sunday December 18.
