Scooter Review VMoto Milan JX50 VMoto’s Milan 50 makes shopping much more fun. The original Iconic 50. $1990+orc
Words & photography by JEREMY BOWDLER I’ve never seen a VMoto in Scooter before. Are they new?
Not really. VMoto has been around as a brand for some years now, but they’ve always sold so many there’s never been any for us to test.
Who are they?
VMoto is an Australian brand, based in Perth, that imports scooters made in China to its specifications.
So they’re cheap...
At $1990+orc, I’d have to agree. The Milan was the fi rst VMoto introduced into Australia and has performed very well, particularly in the West and wherever the 50cc rules apply.
No. I meant cheap as in cheap and nasty.
Not so fast. Admittedly the Milan is a fairly basic scooter, but the styling – retro with a touch of groovy – and the price has brought a lot of riders on to scooters. You can see where the scooters have been built to comply with ADRs (especially in the small cylindrical canister holding the idiot lights behind the left legshield), but the rest of the switchgear is functional and in keeping with the styling. The bodywork is a touch on the flimsy side, but is so cheap to replace that a lot of people are customising their Milans with mix-and-match two-tone panel jobs.
Okay. I’ll take that back ... as long as it performs.
Of course, like all 50s, it is limited to 50kmh, but it is surprisingly feisty. Certainly quicker than a four-stroke 50. Although, and let’s be honest here, the Milan is built for people who are neither 195cm nor 95kg, but even under these
extremes it powered up steep hills with ease.
But does it stop?
Drum brakes front and rear suit the look and the weight of the scooter, though they do need careful attention to work at their best. I found the front a little weak but, backed up by the rear, the braking package was more than adequate.
Will I fit?
If you’re on the petite side of huge you shouldn’t have any problems. And most full -face helmets will fi t under the seat. Carry your shopping on the hook in front of your knees, or on the rack at the back. Just don’t get tempted to share the
experience with a friend – it’s single-seater only, okay?
Actually, I’m a petite, stylish woman who wants to flit about without having to worry
about fuel costs and parking.
Step this way...
