Scooter Review Italjet Torpedo 150 It looks the goods, doesn’t it? And it lives up to them
Photography by MICHAEL PUGH The Torpedo carries Piaggio’s 149cc four-stroke motor that for so long has remained the benchmark mill for many scooters. The engine provides high-speed performance and, teamed with those big wheels, the Torpedo is extremely stable at high speed. The telescopic front forks and pre-load adjustable rear shock deal with the ride comfortably and the disc front and drum rear brakes take care of stopping things.
This big wheeler differs slightly in its wheel sizes from others. Instead of carrying two wheels of the same size, the scoot has a 16- inch front and 14-inch rear. There is a document holder at the front of the rider’s knees and a bag hook just above it. Under-seat storage is enough for a full-face lid and the fuel tank is located under the seat as well.
There is little pillion room, though the rider accommodation is more than sufficient with a seat that feels more like an armchair than scooter seat. Colour options, you ask? Silver, champagne, pastel yellow and cobalt blue.
And would you like accessories? Apart from the after-market stuff that you’ll find around on offer, the importers carry a colourmatched top box and also a front windscreen. Both of these items are ideal for anyone who would use this scooter as a commuter.
Where the Torpedo really wins is its quality of build and components. There are no badly fitting panels and the machining is top notch so much so that, if you were looking for something that was to hold its value, you would be looking in the right place if you were considering a Torpedo.
