THE City of Sydney has scooted into action on the issue of CBD motorcycle parking, reimbursing riders who were fined last week for parking behind the footpath on Kent Street.
A council spokesman said the $77 fines would be repaid because the motorcyclists, who have traditionally parked in that area without incurring a fine, believed they were parking legally.
John McInerney, the chairman of the council's traffic committee, yesterday called for a moratorium on motorcycle parking fines while the council works out its policy.
"Riders have tended to park off the footpath, off the council-owned land on odd pieces of privately owned land, and the council traditionally has not prosecuted people for that," Cr McInerney said.
"I have asked [the council's chief executive Monica Barone] for a moratorium on fines until we have resolved the legalities here."
Cr McInerney said he didn't know if council administration would agree.
"The idea has trickled down to the rangers but I don't think a decision has trickled down," he said.
The council is designing a strategy for promoting scooters and motorcycles which will be put out for public comment later this year.
