Peter Karr from Zoot Scooters sent me an extract from a recent survey on the weekly running costs of a family size car.
A recent survey published by the NRMA put a family sized cars weekly running cost at $266 per week. Cars in this sector included things like the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon and the Mitsubishi 380 sedan.
The NRMA noted the hidden costs in owning a car of this kind included the factors of depreciation and insurance.
An even more concerning factor was that even though the sales of hybrid vehicles have risen extensively in the past year due to the initial capital cost as well as depreciation these vehicles were sometimes dearer to run then a petrol driven alternatives.
All this led me to try and work out what the cost of running a standard 150cc scooter per week taking into account all the factors like registration, insurance, servicing and depreciation.
At first the costs for running the scooter seemed too cheap. So I added things like a set of tyres. Still too cheap. So I added some yearly riding gear costs which when riding a scooter becomes important.
The sum total I could come to is $85 per week
This includes the following
- Servicing
- Fuel
- Tyres
- Registration
- Insurance
- Depreciation
- Riding Gear
And if we compare a small car the Holden Viva for example it still comes in at a whopping $140 per week.
What the NRMA survey doesn’t give you is the added benefits of parking, use of transit lanes, toll benefits as well as the feel good environmental factor.
It really does pay to take a look. Believe me you’ll never look back!
