Kymco Many 50
A funky, modern interpretation of the classic retro styled scooter from Taiwanese manufacturer Kymco.
Kymco recognises retro-style scooters are a significant part of the market, and to maintain its standing as the leader of the Taiwan scooter market, Kymco had to create new a design from old theories. The KYMCO MANY 50 now joins the Taiwan giants' retro-scooter range. A pretty, retro-style scooter with a compact, appealing body design and smooth seat which makes for comfortable riding and easy control. Integrating both modern curves and captivating style makes the Many 50 a retro with a modern twist. The Many 50 marries the classic elements of Italian scooter design with new and modern materials and electronic components.
The round headlamp and the frame of the speedometer enrich the retro-style image. And the front centre ornament combined with the vibrant, colour-changeable park light also strikes a chord with the retro-modern scooter rider. This is further enhanced by the retro body silhouette. The light-hearted pattern of the floor rubber delivers a youthful image while the sharp, diamond-cut look of the lights and indicators offers a modern accent. The old-school retro image is further enhanced by the air filter cover which is designed to look like a spare tyre. The Many 50 shows off the brand new 4-stroke, 3-valve, air-cooled, high performance fuel injection engine. This all new design showcases some new technology for Kymco. The piston is made of a new high-hardness material offering better wear and longevity. Combined with the weight reduction of the redesigned crankshaft and the new roller bearings on the rocker arm, the Many 50 sees horsepower improve 10 to 15%.
In order to save resources, energy and lower consumption, Kymco’s Many 50 uses an advanced fuel injection system which incorporates a 16bit computer controller. This advanced controller unit constantly compensates for environmental change, increasing efficiency while the Idle Speed Control (ISC) ensures smooth idling regardless of conditions. A scaled down throttle body design reduces the weight by about 13% compared to the traditional throttle body design, and the entire unit maximises burning of the fuel for the best efficiency and environmental outcomes.

The design concept of dashboard unit focused on multifunction design with luxurious ‘watch’ like looks. The digital speedometer combines with a multifunction display that shows the current time, the fuel level and the trip/odometer. The mode button provides flexible and easy adjustment or resetting of the display. The obligatory indicator lights are located at the top side of the speedometer. The R/L indicators, high beam indicator, oil indicator are included as well. The transparency of dashboard’s lens and the round shape of its frame combined with modern colour coatings, make the speedometer become even more extraordinary. This is especially the case when riding at night; a glimpse of the speedometer, makes it look like a modern, fashionable watch.
The round, retro-style headlamp maintains the Many 50’s classic character. Drawing on what Kymco calls ‘inspiration from cat’s eyes’, this little retro scooter achieves a fantastic light spread from the PHILIPS HS1 35W high effective halogen light bulb. The park light is integrated into the headlamp and the reflective base adopts a cobweb design which makes the most effective use of the available light. The new tail lamp design incorporates 15 LED’s arranged into a diamond shape, while the number plate lamp uses 4 LED’s. And again, LED’s are used for the indicator lamps- with 12 orange coloured LED’s in each. Kymco say the design of all the lights on the Many 50 is trying to mimic the sparkle and twinkle of jewellery to add an element of ‘fashion’ to this little retro runabout. In fact, to quote the official press release- “The 15 units of diamond shape LED lamps will shine like diamond stars when it turn on or braking in the night time. In general, the rear view of tail lamp shown as created of jewellery”.
Front suspension consists of traditional telescopic forks, while the rear suspension is a single shock with three levels of preload adjustment to cater for different rider weights and riding styles. Front and Rear brakes adopt φ110 mm drums- providing effective and sensitive brake performance.
